Overdiagnosis is a BIG problem

Overdiagnosis (detecting cancers that would never become life-threatening or cause symptoms), accounts for nearly one-third of newly diagnosed breast cancers (more than 70,000 women) according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Check out this article published in the NY Daily News, Nov 12, 2012:

1.3 million overdiagnosed for breast cancer in US

Latest MRI is GOOD GOOD GOOD

Donna climbs to the peak of Mt. San Jacinto in Palm Springs!

Donna climbs to the peak of  Mt. San Jacinto in Palm Springs!

Anyone that’s ever had an MRI knows how much fun it is — NOT! And then there’s the waiting for results!

I want to give a personal shout out to all the folks at Aurora Breast Imaging of Orange County and the radiologists at UC Irvine. I am grateful for the comfort, caring and kindness they showed me.

To learn more about why I have chosen the Aurora RODEO MRI (dedicated breast MRI) for surveillance, please read my article here: https://dcis411.com/2012/02/01/my-choice-for-no-radiation-no-more-mammograms/

Dr. Michael Lagios states: any “dedicated” breast MRI is equivalent to the Aurora RODEO MRI.

What Cancer Taught Me During the Holidays

Cam-family-PortlandThank you to Cameron Von St. James for sharing his inspiring story….

What Cancer Taught Me During the Holidays

by Cameron Von St. James

Making memories, celebrating a great year, spending time with loved ones, and being thankful for new traditions, old traditions, and all the good in life is what makes the holidays such a special time of year for me. The year 2005 was going to be even more special for me, thanks to the fact that my wife and I had our first and only child that summer. In August 2005, we welcomed our daughter Lily into the world, and we couldn’t have been happier to be parents. We were so excited to spend the holidays as a family of three that we spent countless conversations doing nothing but discussing the old holiday traditions we wanted to pass on and the new traditions we wanted to begin now that we were parents.

Three days before Thanksgiving, my world was turned upside down. My wife was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, and in an instant we went from planning for the holidays to fighting a rare and very deadly cancer. I knew that our future was suddenly very uncertain. I was so angry and afraid that I didn’t have time to be thankful. I couldn’t even remember what there was in my life to be thankful for. I was hoping that the best would occur, but I was definitely imagining the worst. I was imagining my life as a single father, without my wife, and my daughter without her mother.

Despite all the sadness of that holiday season, my wife and I celebrated the holidays. We had her parents fly in to visit. We would be leaving for Boston soon after the holidays and we had to do something I was dreading very much. We had to sit down and discuss our finances. Even though Heather and I worked full-time, we didn’t have the ability to stay afloat much longer. The expense of Heather’s cancer, and the fact that we would soon be down to just one income was too much. We sat with my in-laws and discussed everything from our bills to our debts to everything that we could liquidate to stay afloat. My in-laws told us what they could afford to help with and as I sat through this discussion, all I could feel was embarrassment and shame.  It would be years before I could look back on that moment and realize how mistaken I was to view it that way.

I didn’t see it at the time, but it was my pride that had me dreading this conversation so much and feeling as if though we had nothing to be thankful for that holiday season. I actually had a lot to be thankful for during that time in my life. My family was willing to put a hold on their own lives, making incredible sacrifices of their own, in order to help us through our tough time.  I will forever be grateful for everything they did. This year, the holidays mean more to me than ever. I am thankful for everyone who helped us during this time, and for all the memories I will make with my wife and daughter this year.  After intensive mesothelioma surgeries and treatments, my wife beat her cancer, and we’ve been able to celebrate seven Christmases and counting together with Lily.  We hope that our story of success against cancer, against overwhelming odds, can be a source of hope and comfort to all those currently fighting cancer this holiday season.

HIKE PREPARATION & CANCER PREVENTION: A Common Thread

Eight determined women hike                                   “Cactus to Clouds” in 13.5 hours

What does preparation for a grueling hike up a 10,000 foot mountain have in common with DCIS and breast cancer prevention?

1. Investigation: Both require gathering information and understanding what you are facing.

2. Training: Practice, practice, practice makes for success. Daily exercise is also a well known contributor to cancer prevention. The side effects are a healthy, fit body, loads of energy and peace of mind.

3. Essential Ingredients: Ensuring you have the right stuff in your pack is as important as ensuring you put the right stuff in your body.

4.  A Practical, Positive Attitude: Whether climbing a mountain or dealing with DCIS and breast cancer prevention, it boils down to “one foot in front of the other” and “take it as it comes.”

5. Gratitude: I am so grateful for the experience and accomplishment I shared with my fellow hikers as well as all that I have learned regarding DCIS and breast cancer prevention.

Thank you to all who have supported me and my “Hike for the CAUSE….”

“Cactus to Clouds…” Hike for the CAUSE…Tell Cancer to TAKE A HIKE!

On Friday Oct 12th, I am hiking the “Cactus to Clouds” hike in Palm Springs. Here is a description from another hiker: “This, in my opinion is the hardest hike in Southern California. It has even made it on to Backpacker Magazine’s list of America’s hardest day hikes!”

You start in Palm Springs at an altitude of about 450 ft., which is virtually at sea level, and ascend to the summit more than two vertical miles at over 10,800 ft. in a matter of about 15 miles. En route, you pass the Palm Spring Aerial Tramway’s Mountain Station at about 8,500 ft.

With “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in mind, please join me in spirit! Your support is greatly appreciated!!!5 WAYS…5 REASONS… 6 CHARITIES…To better understand, treat and eliminate the CAUSES of cancer

All is Good: Ultrasound Shows Only Scar Tissue

Carlsbad 1/2 Marathon – Jan 2011

All is good. Due to lumpy tissue in my breast in the location of the incision where 3 surgeries took place, I agreed to have an ultrasound check it out.  After enduring a lecture on why mammograms are the gold standard, I stood my ground and said NO to a mammogram. As I expected, the ultrasound showed only scar tissue. All is good. 🙂

IS “ACIDOSIS” THE ROOT CAUSE OF DISEASE?

Alkaline Foods!

ACIDOSIS (imbalance of ph towards the acidic side) / MICRO-FLORA IMBALANCE (when the microorganisms in your intestinal tract are not properly balanced – these microorganisms account for 80% of your immune system and require a balanced proportion). Like all things in life, problems arise when an imbalance sways too far in one direction. The body depends on many balances and one in particular, ph, when unbalanced, causes serious illnesses of every symptom you can imagine.

Acidosis is the primary ROOT CAUSE of 100′s, if not 1000′s of ailments and disease. Acidic bodies (or acidosis) experience a rapid decline of a functioning immune system and provide an environment where harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens can thrive to further proliferate the problem. When your immune system is shot, any organ or system can and will start to shut down. Acidic ‘food’ and chemicals (sugar, coffee, tap water, meat, dairy products, alcohol, processed foods, toxic chemicals, and anything with high-fructose corn syrup, etc.) create a highly acidic environment in the body. An acidic body lacks oxygen (which is crucial for health), destroys the immune system, and creates an environment where pathogens will grow and prosper. The acidic food items mentioned above are also the dietary cause of heart disease, America’s #1 leading cause of death, so you can see we’re already starting to get somewhere with the importance of this information. In addition, tap water needs to be 100% avoided as it contains fluoride and chlorine, which both create an acidic environment and also kill your body’s beneficial micro-flora (micro organisms that perform endless vital processes which also needs a stable balance to avoid dis-ease) in the same fashion as antibiotics do.

HOW TO ELIMINATE OR PREVENT ACIDOSIS & RESTORE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM TO RE-BALANCE YOUR HEALTH

Taking probiotics (about 2 billion organisms a day) and eating fermented foods (organic, unprocessed sauerkraut, kombucha, etc.) will restore the healthy / missing microorganisms, which can CHANGE YOUR LIFE. You can buy probiotics in capsule form and also the fermented foods at the health food store. The leading earth foods that are your powerful allies during the re-balancing / healing process: cayenne pepper, apple cider vinegar (with the “mother,” real lemon juice, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), neem, goji berries, reishi, and garlic. Eating organic fruits & vegetables will give your body the absorbable vitamins & minerals that are also needed for all major bodily harmony. All of these are inexpensive and can be found in your local health store or online. If one cuts out the acidic items, integrates leafy greens / vegetables DAILY (by juicing or salads) and incorporates the allies listed above, the body will restore its natural healthy state into balance in due time with consistent, daily application. You can test and keep track of your body’s ph (acidity vs alkalinity) level with ph strips (found at the health food store). If you choose to test yourself, be sure to test both your urine and your saliva. A healthy balance is right around 7.4 – if it is lower, it is acidic. If it is higher, it is alkaline. Pure water itself is about 7.0 and proper amounts of water throughout the day helps keep a healthy level. Acidic bodies create inflammation, cancer, infections, pain, auto-immune issues (where the immune system attacks itself because it is not functioning properly) and SO much more. If you have a balanced alkalinity and stomach flora, your immune system can heal and prevent any attack on it. Many doctors who have learned this recently have claimed they weren’t taught this information in medical school while they were learning about pharmaceutical varieties. They are taught to prescribe you an antibiotic to kill the pathogens that have already grown in your acidic body which helps for a short while to fight infection, but creates more serious issues because the anti-biotics (which is literally translated to “no-life”) do not restore other NEEDED microorganisms, as mentioned above. They treat the symptom temporarily, but not the root cause, which means the other issues will soon arise. Lack of exercise, lack of clean air, negative thoughts (toward self or others), guilt, and shame also contribute to acidity and dis-ease in the body, so forgiveness and taking life not so seriously helps contribute to peaceful health. A balanced ph diet and probiotics are imperative for anyone who is experiencing health issues of any kind who have recently (past 3-7 years) taken antibiotics or vaccinations. Every single one of us owes it to ourselves to understand this information and take the proper steps to maintain true balance in our bodies. Please share this post with anyone you feel may benefit from it. This should be the first thing taught in health class (and medical school), due to its absolute significance to what ‘health’ really is. With this information alone, one could become a health practitioner to provide comfort and well-being to the billions of people suffering in the world with this costly imbalance. Here is a helpful article by Dr. Mark Hyman on Savvy Supplement Shopping.

Please remember, it is critically important to consult with and be supervised by a certified nutritionist, a  naturopathic Dr. or an integrative Dr regarding supplements. These heath-care specialists are specially trained in prescribing general, preventative and therapeutic levels of appropriate vitamins and minerals specific to one’s condition and needs. And this can change depending on lab tests.

Why Naturopathic Medicine?

I can not emphasize enough the importance of finding a Naturopathic Dr. to oversee your individualized optimal health and healing program. EVERYONE needs this kind of healthcare — from children to those who are going through chemo! Our western medical model is set up for “disease management,” but it is not focused on optimizing long-term health and well-being. I am so grateful to have qualified healthcare experts/advisers who have years of experience in nutrition, supplements, herbs, hormone balancing, stress reduction, etc. overseeing my health & wellness program. I have been intensely studying this field for the last two years and it simply MAKES SENSE!!

My cousin Amy and her husband Paul  have a Naturopathic Health Care Clinic in Connecticut. Here is an excerpt from their website (http://www.nhcmed.com/home.html):

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of family medicine that skillfully combines ancient therapeutic traditions with modern science to restore health. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) use a variety of therapies to restore and maintain the health of their patients including clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, physical medicine, and lifestyle recommendations. We work to support the body’s innate ability to heal with natural therapeutics by following the guiding principles of naturopathic medicine:

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

Our work is guided by our strong adherence to our elegant and enduring philosophy which includes:

Supporting the healing power of nature; we believe in the body’s innate ability to heal.

  • Identify and treat the causes. We work to go beyond treating the symptoms of an illness to find the cause of illness whenever possible.
  • Like all physicians, we aim for the classic tenet: First, do no harm. We use low risk and natural methods to treat patients using approaches that have few to no side effects.
  • Educate patients. We believe that knowledge is power, so we work to educate our patients about healthy eating habits, other healthy lifestyle changes as well as on how to decrease and manage stress. Whenever we can, we try to involve our patients and the parents of our patients in the prevention and treatment at home or in the approaches they can learn to use themselves.
  • We believe that our health is determined by physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social and spiritual elements and so aim to treat the whole person.
  • We strongly believe in the axiom “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” so we work with our patients to create specific healthy lifestyle plans that take into account personal risk factors, heredity and vulnerability to future disease.

Education of Naturopathic Doctors:

As licensed naturopathic doctors (ND) we attend four-year, post-graduate, in-residence accredited naturopathic medical schools. The institutions in the United States are recognized by the Federal Department of Education. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, the naturopathic doctor is required to complete four years of training in clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, naturopathic philosophy, psychology, and counseling. Upon graduating, NDs must sit for and pass a national level board examination called NPLEX for licensure. NPLEX follows the same standards as the National Board of Medical Examiners, the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. For further information on Naturopathic Medical Schools in North America please see the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Schools.
