My Choice for NO RADIATION & NO MORE MAMMOGRAMS

“The most benign-appearing forms of DCIS (for example, low nuclear grade, small-celled without necrosis, estrogen- and progesterone-receptor positive,c-erbB2 negative, etc.), if untreated, may never cause clinical disease. Less than 50% of low-grade lesions develop into invasive breast cancer over a 25- to 30-year period. This finding goes back to an issue raised earlier as to whether or not DCIS, and in particular, low-grade DCIS, should be classified as breast cancer.” Excerpted from Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the Breast: Controversial Issues by Dr. Melvin J. Silverstein.

Despite the fact that the above article was written in 1998, not much has changed in regards to understanding best treatment for varying levels of DCIS. “Standard of care” is still generally a one size fits all approach —  6 weeks of radiation following lumpectomy  or mastectomy for all DCIS patients.

I have done my homework. I have listened to all the sides. I have gotten multiple expert opinions. I understand the statistics and rates of recurrence with and without radiation therapy considering I have a “close margin” of .1mm after 2 recent lumpectomies.

In my opinion and experience, the current “standard of care” treatment that I received with 3 surgeries performed by wire-guided mammograms is ineffective (I had positive or close margins after all 3 surgeries). And I believe cumulative radiation exposure from excessive mammograms is harmful. (See my post: The Insanity of DCIS Surgery)

I have already had 11 mammograms in 6 years. If I continue having mammograms every 6 months as recommended, by the time I’m 50 I’ll have had 19 mammograms.

Radiologists, oncologists and breast surgeons claim there is little harm from radiation, especially the new digital mammograms. My Naturopathic Dr. told me that radiation can contribute to/cause thyroid disease and thyroid cancer — not to mention all the other possible long-term harm that is underplayed by radiologists, oncologists and breast surgeons. Please read this excerpt on mammograms from Breast Cancer? Breast Health! by Susun S. Weed

Dr. Oz recently did a show on The Increase in Thyroid Cancer. While the incidence of many cancers is declining, thyroid cancer is one that is steadily soaring, especially in women.

One of my goals is to advocate for women diagnosed with DCIS or those who are at high risk for breast cancer to be able to have insurance authorize dedicated breast MRIs such as AURORA MRI, automated ultrasound, and thermograms as ways to monitor low-intermediate grade DCIS.  My breast surgeon told me, “You may get and MRI authorized once, but insurance will not substitute MRIs for mammograms for annual follow up.”

Amazingly, many oncologists and breast surgeons have never heard of the Aurora RODEO MRI. Through some persistence, I’m happy to report I had my first Aurora Breast MRI at UC Irvine a few days ago. After hearing my case, my primary care physician kindly ordered it and my insurance authorized it.

Expert breast cancer pathologist, Dr. Michael Lagios states: “Any ‘dedicated’ breast MRI is equivalent to the Aurora RODEO MRI.

I am choosing NO RADIATION & NO MORE MAMMOGRAMS! I choose dedicated breast MRIs as an annual monitoring tool. I have also had thermograms and ultrasounds in between. But more importantly I am focused on health-promoting “anti-cancer” foods & supplements, yoga, exercise and keeping toxins and stress away from my body, mind and spirit.

Huge thanks to Sandie Walters for referring me and other women to “dedicated” Breast MRI!

***Update 2018:

Since personally meeting Dr. Kevin Kelly, inventor of SonoCine Automated Whole Breast ultrasound in 2015, I have only done annual SonoCine for breast imaging. Prior to this, I was doing annual dedicated breast MRI and thermography. I stopped doing mammograms in 2011. Please read more at:

Fascinating article regarding margins and re-excisions…..

“there is no evidence that a margin any bigger than “not touching ink” affects cancer recurrence or survival, said Dr. Morrow”

You Did What? Saying “NO” to Conventional Cancer Treatment

I just finished reading this fascinating book….it is a story about Hollie Quinn, a 27 year old woman who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2002 while she was 38 weeks pregnant. Hollie and her husband Patrick share how they came to a decision to reject conventional treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy, and instead, chose an intense lifestyle change and an “alternative” treatment path that would lead to health and healing.  I highly recommend this book. Check out their facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/YouDidWhatBook

Thanks to Kay Ashley for recommending this book and also “Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer” by Donald Yance.  This is the book that was instrumental in Hollie’s decision to seek treatment at the Centre for for Natural Healing in Oregon.

Peace, Love & “The Science of Happiness”

A True Guru (Bringer of Light) — Katy Guard

How have I managed to stay calm, happy and filled with gratitude throughout my two year DCIS roller coaster ride filled with mammograms,  MRIs, 1 needle biopsy, 3 surgeries,  waiting for pathology results, multiple opinions, information overload and doctors who continually try to scare the (bleep) out of me?

Everything I know about staying calm – no matter what – is thanks to two enlightened souls who have blessed my life. One is Adriana (see “An Angel Called Adriana“) and the other is Katy Guard, my 80 year (young) yoga teacher who is the purest, happiest person I have ever known. Katy and her husband Yogiraj Behramji came to the US from India over 30 years ago and opened the first “Yoga and Meditation School” in San Diego.

I got hooked on Katy’s hatha yoga class 10 years ago. I remember how Katy’s teachings brought such peace and calm to me immediately following 9-11 when “terror” and fear permeated our society. I was a new mom with typical anxieties and my mind couldn’t rest. Katy changed all that for me. After an hour and a half of yoga postures where Katy gave detailed descriptions of the internal workout of organs intertwined with ancient wisdom from the yogis, Katy guided me into a deep relaxation which can only be described as “bliss.”  According to Katy, yoga is “the science of happiness.” And I am a true believer!

Two and a half years ago, just a few months before my DCIS diagnosis, Katy began leading a weekly “meditation class” studying the spiritual classic “I AM THAT” — a compilation of dialogues between world-wide spiritual seekers and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, a self-realized Indian sage. A seven week class turned into 2.5 years and our small gatherings in Katy’s home every Wednesday night are still going strong! I am certain that my ability to remain calm and filled with peace, love and gratitude is largely due to Katy and our contemplations on “I AM THAT.”

“Between spirit and body, LOVE provides the bridge. Mind creates the abyss, the heart crosses it.”  – Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Article boasts “watchful waiting” option…

Watchful waiting may be the more sensible approach upon diagnosis with DCIS, but most women are not informed of this option…

An Angel called Adriana

I honor the place in you which the entire universe dwells. I honor the place in you which is of love, of truth, of light, and of peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are one. ~ Namaste

“No-no-no,” Adriana insisted with her Colombian accent. “You mustn’t do these invasive treatments… You must come see me immediately.”  Upon learning of my diagnosis in an email I initially sent out, my dear friend, Adriana, who is an orthomolecular nutritionist and energy healer, took me under her wings and began to re-educate me about the human body and its digestive process. She assured me that I had nothing to fear and that our bodies have natural abilities to heal when given the right foods and environment. She taught me about detoxification, building my immune system and alkalizing my body with raw, whole, organic Super foods. Amazingly, as healthy as I thought I was, I had never heard of the alkaline-acid balance and that the foods we ingest become either acid or alkaline in our bodies – and over-acidity can lead to or enhance diseases like cancer. I discovered that many of the foods and beverages I loved were acid-forming, such as: coffee, bread, cheese, jam, cereal, sugar, ice cream, sugar-free gum and beer. I learned that I did not have enough GOOD fat in my diet and I was probably deficient in protein and certain vitamins and minerals because I didn’t eat enough variety of fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Adriana took me to the health food store and showed me how to read ingredients and choose healthier versions of foods. I ate kale and chard for the first time in my life!

Adriana did not go to medical school, but she seemed to know more about cancer than the cancer doctors! She explained cancer to me from a scientific cellular level and assured me that DCIS was NOT cancer and NOTHING to be in fear of. From her perspective, it was the FEAR that was the worst part of a DCIS diagnosis.

Adriana advised me on foods and supplements specific for immunity building and breast cancer prevention. She had me put drops of chlorophyll in my water and gave me a list of foods to eat and to eliminate (see holistic health). She guided me through a two week raw food cleanse including an intensive weekend detox where she whipped up raw soups, tonics and teas round the clock! Adriana told me if I did everything she said and put off doing an MRI for a month, it would be clear.  And it was!!!

This changed the course of action I would take for treatment. I was emboldened to say “no” to my team of doctors whose options were a lumpectomy plus 7 weeks of radiation or a mastectomy.

I believe angels appear when we need them most. I wasn’t looking for an alternative path, but when Adriana spoke to me about the body-mind-spirit healing connection, I resonated with EVERYTHING she said and I was hungry to learn and live by her wisdom. Adriana lovingly gave endless hours of time to me as if I were her family. She instilled in me a new way of eating, thinking and living in peace – even with the uncertainty of a DCIS diagnosis. Her words were the calm in the storm. I am eternally grateful for her wisdom, her time and her guiding light.

2nd Opinions Matter!!!

Thank you for creating "DCIS without Rads!"

Thank you for creating “DCIS without Rads!”

I can not stress how grateful I am to Sandie Walters for creating a website “DCIS Without Rads” about her DCIS story and referring me to Dr. Michael Lagios, a 30 year DCIS expert and pathologist who offers a 2nd opinion consultation service. His evaluation of my actual pathology slides brought great peace of mind to me.

He explained the unique characteristics of my particular DCIS and used the Van Nuys Prognostic Index  which takes into account age, size, grade and margins of the DCIS to determine the rate of recurrence and the best next steps. He offered me new insights and options that were not previously presented by my doctors.

Dr. Lagios gave me permission to post my phone consultation with him:

Update June 2018: Dr. Lagios unfortunately has retired. Please see his recommendation for 2nd opinion in this post:
