MDs who support Active Surveillance of low-risk DCIS

 Expert 2nd Opinions:

  • Dr. Michael Lagios: 30 year DCIS pathology expert offering 2nd opinion consultation services.
  • Dr. Melvin Silverstein: Specialist in “Oncoplastic surgery” – For those wanting to avoid mastectomy, Dr. Silverstein performs lumpectomies with breast reconstruction technology.
  • Yale Medical Group: Second Opinion Consultations

Imaging, Screening & Individualized Treatment:

  • SonoCine Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound (AWBUS): Invented by radiologist Dr. Kevin Kelly, AWBUS can find tiny invasive cancers often missed on mammography, especially in dense breast tissue.
  • Oncotype DX for DCIS: can help determine the likelihood of DCIS returning or the tumor returning as invasive breast cancer.
  • The Van Nuys Prognostic Index: offers a more tailored prognosis than the one size fits all treatment approach. It is based on size & grade of DCIS, margins and age of patient.
  • Seek out a “dedicated” breast MRI and ask your doctor to order this for surveillance.
  • Johns Hopkins 2nd opinion mammogram evaluation: service requires Birads 4 or higher. Can be referred by Dr. or patient. If insurance doesn’t cover it, the fee is $150.

This is great! Thanks for putting all these resources on here! 😀 Does anybody know of a DCIS support group in Southern Cailfornia? They have one in Northern CA but I can’t find one down here. I just called UCLA Simms/Mann Center and they told me they used to have one but not anymore. Thank you and white light! 😀

I too have called around San Diego Cancer Centers and there is no DCIS specific support group. I went to a Breast Cancer support group and it wasn’t what I was looking for. Please let me know if you hear of a DCIS- specific support group in So. cal! Thanks Marimar….and white light back!

    Hi dp4peace,

There’s a group in Palo Alto apparently. I called there and they gave me some numbers to call in Southern California. I will let you know if I find one down here. Thank you so much for this website. It’s a great source of information and makes me feel less alone with all this. Thank you and white light!
